Friends and family from all over the world gathered at the beautiful Tides Estate for the couple’s Indian Ceremony. Our bride wore a gorgeous red Shyamal and Bhumika lehenga for Ceremony #1. To stay true to the Indian Style, the talented team from Atlas Floral designed the mandap with bold and vibrant roses and hydrangeas. Following the Ceremony, the bride’s family and friends put together some very memorable performances for the Sangeet.
Our bride and groom decided to say “I Do” for the second time at the iconic Plaza Hotel for their American Ceremony. In contrast with the previous day, the decor was elegantly designed with a timeless palette of whites, ivories, and touches of greenery and branches. The bride looked simply breathtaking as she graced the second Ceremony in a custom Romona Keveza gown.
Towering lush floral centerpieces, a magnificent halo of blooms and crystals rigged from the ceiling, and a custom designed dance floor wrap made the Reception absolutely swoon-worthy. Guests were wined and dined with an exquisite five-course meal, which concluded with a decadent cake from our dear friend, Ron Ben-Israel. Each guest was totally stunned to receive Tiffany and Co. champagne flutes as mementos from the grand soiree. Nothing gets more extra than handing out those iconic Tiffany blue boxes!

Answering the call to the brides who are budget conscious. We asked Shipra Aggarwal, a financial write in India to share her insights. Enjoy.
How to budget your wedding expenses?
The wedding is the most important day in anyone’s life. Everyone wants it to be special and memorable. Hosting a good wedding does not mean that you need to empty your bank accounts or eat all your savings to celebrate one day.
Often, a lot of couples or families are smart enough to start accumulating funds early in their lives for the big day. However, there are many people, who despite having savings find it difficult to plan a perfect wedding. With wedding costs soaring high, it often gets difficult to find money. Fortunately, today there are a lot of ways through which wedding expenses can be easily managed without putting you in a lot of pressure. But before even arranging funds, you need to start thinking about planning a budget.
Planning a budget
Weddings can be overwhelming, even for the richer class. It is quite easy to get carried away when it comes to impressing your guests. However, weddings don’t have to be an expensive affair all the time. Hence, everyone needs to have a budget to plan a wedding and stick by it. Now the big question arises, where to start in the first place?
Families or couples need to break down each and every expense for the day. There are many expenses like number of ceremonies, rituals, number of guests, gifts, jewelry, brides and groom dress, venues, catering etc. Each and every small thing needs to be thought and planned carefully. Pin down every small expense that you think and attach a realistic amount to that expense. You can even use wedding budget planners to make your life, simple and easy for you. These planners have everything listed, right from venue to honeymoon. Once you have everything listed and budget assigned, you would know the amount of expense you require and how many funds you have and how much extra would you need.
Planning a budget would give you a fair idea of how much money you would need to ensure everything is covered in it and you also need to keep a little extra for emergent expenses.
Finding the budget
Once you have a figure in hand, you would know exactly how much you have and how much more you need or do you need the entire amount. There are ways through which you can arrange money for the wedding:-
- Take out a little from savings – if you have money saved in your accounts, you can assign some part of it for the wedding. The rest you can and you should keep for other important life expenses. Don’t use the entire savings on one day.
- Use credit cards – Credit cards a great way to manage funds for the wedding. There are many companies that offer travel discount cards through which by booking you can get cash back or discounts on air tickets or hotel reservations.For example:- HDFC bank credit cards are best suited for having a travel credit card,its HDFC Diners Club Black Credit Card is a elite travel card providing free lounge access worldwide and bonus reward points.Banks also offer reward cards or discount cards. Many banks have tied up with online stores like Amazon, Jabong, Flipkart etc today to increase sales and credit card purchase. By using these cards on these stores can buy you discounts or cash back. So, if you have these cards then it is great and if you don’t, you should apply for one today.
- Personal loans – Instant loans are a great way to arrange wedding funds. Families can apply for instant personal loans to create the wedding fund. The good thing about a personal loan is that the borrower doesn’t have to provide any security to the bank and also don’t have given the reason to spend the money. However, it totally depends on your eligibility to apply for loans like income, age, credit score etc. Depending on your eligibility, banks can grant you the loan. But before you apply, it is important that you check for interest rates and compare them carefully. Go for the banks that provide the lowest interest rates.
- Take secured loan – if a personal loan is not an option for you, you can also go for secured loans like gold loan or loan against LIC or FD’s or other securities like Mutual funds or shares or NSC’s etc. Borrowers can pledge these securities to the bank and get the amount valuing the pledged security.
- Asking from friends or family – Keep this as your last option because you can’t be dependent on this one. People may or may not have the money to lend you. But don’t hesitate as well. If you think they can help you in any way, don’t hesitate to ask for help. But again, use this option only if you have exhausted all the others.
Ways to cut costs on wedding
These are some ways through which you can arrange for the extra required funds for the wedding. Now you have the budget and the money, but you still don’t have to go overboard with the expenses. You can still manage to cut costs and can still have a beautiful wedding.
- Don’t outsource – Outsourcing a wedding can be costlier. There are certain expenses that need to be outsourced like catering. But venue and decorations can be something where you can cut costs. There are ways to save on invitations as well, by designing your own invitation cards. Try and plan the wedding yourself as much as possible.
- Negotiate with vendors – Don’t just blindly accept the costs offered by the vendors. Research the market, take quotes from 10 different vendors, compare the services and then agree on a price. There is always a possibility of negotiation in the services offered by the wedding industry.
- Prioritize – Prioritizing your expenses is again a great way to cut costs. One of the biggest expenditures for a wedding is food, decorations, wedding dress, and photography. Some couples like splurge on decorations and food, while some would like to spend on photography and dress. Depending on your personal choice, you can cut costs.
To sum it up, you need to ensure that you utilize the budget wisely and in the best way possible. You may be dreaming about this one day your entire life, but your entire life after the wedding depends on how smartly you spend on this day.

TS – HOW DID YOU GET STARTED IN THE WEDDING INDUSTRY?
What started as a leisurely hobby turned into a full business! Always being an aesthete, I had a knack for dressing and decorating spaces. Friends and acquaintances were quick to notice this and many asked me to help stylize their family weddings. Soon after, clients began reaching out to me. When I realized how much I enjoyed designing decor it evolved into a full time profession and just like that, Élan Events was founded.
TS – WHAT WAS THE BIGGEST LESSON YOU LEARNED EARLY ON IN YOUR BUSINESS?
As a creative person, you instinctively want to give your imagination free reign. It becomes easy to get carried away when working on designs and you want to conveniently overlook that everyone always has a budget.
As important as it is to be able to cater to what your clients want and more, it’s also very important to be realistic with them and not overcommit or else you’ll end up promising one thing and delivering another. I learnt this the hard way, but over the years I’ve become very clear and conscious of what we promise our couples so that each one can eventually say “we got so much more than we even expected
TS – HOW HAS THE INDUSTRY CHANGED SINCE YOU STARTED?
Expectations have increased as everyone’s visions have widened. With social media, many wedding blogs, and Pinterest, everyone has access to more. This means all our clients request more variety and want to explore many options before settling for their wedding design. All our brides are also more particular about selecting something different for themselves in an interest stand apart.
On November 6th, 2016, (my dad’s 52nd birthday) Amit proposed to me. We all decided to have dinner out at a restaurant for my dad’s birthday. This is gonna sound really bad, but I didn’t even notice that Amit wasn’t at the dinner table for a good ten minutes haha! I asked where he was and his mom said he was running late and was on his way. His dad said that he had a gift for my dad. He stepped away and said he’d be back with his gift. I see him wheeling a flatbed with a huge box tied with a bow. My dad said, “Wow, this box is huge! I wonder what it is!” I told him to rip the box open, but then I saw it move a little. I swear my heart stopped when my dad untied the bow and the four sides of the box came down and Amit popped out with a bouquet of red roses and a huge diamond ring! He said, “Janu, I love you so much and I want to spend the rest of my life with you.” And then he asked me to marry him in Gujarati! I was beyond happy and I could tell that he was, too.

Preethi and Mitesh are the epitome of a whirlwind romance. They started out as acquaintances in medical school, turned into friends and eventually love took its course. With Preethi being a cardiologist and Mitesh being a orthopedic surgeon, the amount of time they had was limited to plan a wedding. This five hundred person affair lent itself to be one of their most challenging tasks in the midst of a hectic career schedule.
And then our phone rang. Preethi, an unassuming breath of fresh air called to inquire about our availability and pricing. Priya, our chief planner and founder met Preethi in person and the night turned from a one-hour planner consultation to the start of an amazing friendship. The chosen date for their venue somehow ended up getting booked urgently, and we’ll never forget the day Preethi called us in tears. As a physician, she only had a certain amount of time off, and now that time was going to be impacted due to the change of date. Priya assured her it was all going to work out – and when all was said and done, this was going to work out for the best. And it did! For the next eight months, the Premini Events team guided this lovely couple to create a fairytale dream of a wedding.
Guests walked into a cherry blossom botanical garden. The layout of this magnificent reception stemmed from avoiding round tables and strictly using a rectangular and square layout. A funny fact about this wedding was a week prior, we had found out that Preethi’s dad was keeping a private separate guest list that had 100 people more then what we were expecting. With swift action from our team, we had to notify ever vendor from catering, to décor, to rentals, to venue, etc… and pull off what seemed like the impossible!
This fun filled couple spent the day thoroughly enjoying each and every moment. From a first look prank that ended up in a décor truck, to a midday basketball game, to dancing the night away to EDM and house music which eventually lead to a mean game of beer pong involving parents – this wedding was anything shy of being “ordinary”! Preethi and Mitesh were not only a wonderful couple to work with, but now ingrained in the Premini Events family as a forever friend.

How do you provide education to your couple’s during the planning process?: In person, by phone, email, whatsapp…detailed planning of their ceremony to make sure it is the exact ceremony they want. I do everything I can to make sure that the part I play in the most important day in the couples’ life is perfect.

Our travels have taken us to every continent except Antarctica (Jasprit is not a fan of the cold!). Our love for history, architecture, design, fashion, and food keeps our minds inquisitive, and this reflects in our business acumen.
How long have you been a professional? I’ve been in the travel field for 28 years! Wow, that sounds like a very long time; however, I started in the spring break market during my first year of university. I realized I could travel the world and get paid for doing so!
How did you get your start? I first started in the travel world during university. I saw a poster around campus that said ‘TRAVEL FOR FREE. GET 20 OF FRIENDS, AND YOUR TRIP IS FREE!’ I ended up selling 120 trips and not only did I travel for free, but I was also paid cash for the other 100 trips I sold! After I completed my degree in Economics and Political Science, I worked for a large Corporate Incentive House. That lasted eight months; then I started L’Escape in 1997 as a Corporate Incentive Travel Company. Our clientele included Hewlett Packard, Chrysler, Pfizer, and some other Fortune 1000 companies. In 2009, we expanded into the field of Destination Weddings after I married my soul mate! Jasprit, my wife and business partner, has a Master’s in Food Science and was a Director of a Multi-National Corporation before she left and decided to take on a pet project which is now L’Escape Destination Weddings! I am blessed to live, work and travel with her!
Describe your style in three words: Stylish, Sophisticated, Timeless
What services do you provide? L’Escape is a full-service company. I like to say “We are your travel agent. We are your wedding planner. We are your event management team. We can be your stylist (depending on the complexity of your event!). Having control of your entire event is a must for our business model. It creates balance for everyone involved. I compare it to being the General Manager, Head Coach, and Quarterback of a football team.
Do you have a team? Since we focus only on destination weddings, having teams are essential. Our travel team manages all the travel and logistics of your event. Our planning team manages all the events and the fine details. Jasprit is our closer as she is very knowledgeable about destinations and resorts. I am more the business side, and now and again, I love to be the lead on site. I am obsessed with the flow of events. No matter how beautiful your event looks, if the flow is not right, then the guest experience is compromised, and in my humble opinion, that is one of the most important elements of an event.
How has social media changed your business? It’s ALL about social media these days. People have instant access to not only your work, but they also have instant access to reviews. Social media just adds another layer to a business. It can be positive, or it can be negative. L’Escape has been cautious in growing because we will not compromise our work, our service and our integrity for more business. Once you have one bad review on social media, that scar is very difficult to erase. I embrace the changes in social media, and it’s imperative to be ahead of the curve!
How do you provide education to your couple’s during the planning process? We like to say, the more information we give a couple, the better their decision-making process is. L’Escape is big believers in sharing all the knowledge we have even before a couple becomes a client. We are not afraid to share because we have been blessed. Jasprit and I live in a world of abundance. Our life motto translates to our business motto.
What makes a successful wedding? One word…EXPERIENCE! By this I mean, did the client, their families, their guests, and the vendors have an excellent EXPERIENCE from start to finish. From being on budget, to selection of the right resort/destination, to selecting the right vendors, to travel, to hospitality, to design of the events, to flow of the events, to guest management, to being on time, to selecting the right venues at the resort, to creating exceptional food and drink, to the after party! I could on and on, however, if the couple and their families take a step back a few days or weeks after the last event and look back at the EXPERIENCE and smile, we have accomplished our goal, and the events deemed successful!

It is not an understatement to say that if L’Escape were not our wedding planners, our dream wedding would not have come true! What makes you different? I’ll list our Top 5! (or 6)!
(1.) KNOWLEDGE: I’ve stated this earlier however I believe our competitive advantage is KNOWLEDGE! We have traveled the world and have stayed in many beautiful properties. Our eye and attention to detail is I would say a little sharper because we look for things that most people would not. Our expectations are heightened!
(2.) MINI CORPORATION: With my Corporate Incentive experience and Jasprit working as a Director for multinational, we have taken the position to treat every client like a mini-corporation. The experience, service, and communication is professional. Everything is documented, and we do not use WhatsApp for important decisions. Everything is documented on email!
(3.) CONNECTION: We are blessed to have been afforded the opportunity to run this business, not out of necessity, but one of joy. Our connection to the couple and their family is important, and there has to be a synergy between both L’Escape and the couple….we chose them, and they chose us!
(4.) EVENT FLOW: I have been running events and parties for the past 35 years, and I get bored quickly, so it’s imperative that our events are engaging and entertaining. If you’ve been to an L’Escape event, you will know what I am speaking about!

Do you want to offer prospective clients any advice on hiring a professional? Absolutely!
(1.) PLANNING: Do not base your decision on price, base it on value! What are you getting in your professional? Experience, reliability, professionalism, knowledge. All these are important. We have had countless couples come back to us after they have hired someone for less money. I always say, you get what you pay for!
(2.) EXPERIENCE: Experience is key for destination weddings. Working around the globe, in foreign countries is not for the faint of heart. You have to have relationships and a global network to succeed. We specialize only in destination weddings. Hire a company that does more than five destination weddings a year!
(3.) WEDDING BUDGET: Have a realistic budget for your wedding. Weddings are not inexpensive these days so chose your location and venue based on your budget vs. choosing your budget based on the location/venue you want or love. Remember life continues after your wedding (and so do those bills!)
(4.) TRUST IS A MUST: Trust and intuition are key when choosing any professional. If you don’t hit it off from the get-go, then they are not the right company for you
(5.) SIMPLIFY: Hire someone who can make your life easy. You have to enjoy the ride and the process. There are plenty of details, and you have to like the person you are working with!
Sumiti and Ramit’s wedding was an event that meant a lot to them in light of a scary medical incident that happened to Ramit about three months before the event. Following the event, they came to appreciate each other even more, relish every moment they had and live in the moment with the beautiful friends and family that surrounded them. The planning process was a total team effort from both of the families and support from all of our vendors. Ramit’s family’s background in the catering and venue industry was crucial as they had a lot of flexibility in building an extensive, unique menu offering at each occasion. In fact, they also underwent a renovation at Akbar prior to the event to enhance the aesthetics of the venue. They selected the wedding vendors based on personality and work quality and felt so fortunate that they met people and chosen vendors who are incredibly passionate about their professions and made a personal connection with this beautiful couple. One vendor who expressed such passion was Priyanca, the photographer. Sumiti and Ramit didn’t think they ever expected that they would spend as much time with the wedding photographer on the day of the event, but they’re so glad they did and wouldn’t have it any other way. Priyanca made it easy for us to let loose during our pictures and was incredibly creative. Without her insights, they wouldn’t have the beautiful uniquely captured photos of the event. These are photos that they can hold forever and allow us to relive the wedding at any point.

Where are you located? Do you travel? We are located in NYC. We travel all over the world for our couples. We have been honored to design and plan weddings in Dubai, Italy, Greece, Caribbean, all over the US.
How long have you been a professional? 15 years
Everyone has to start from somewhere. How did you turn your dream into a reality? How did you get your start? My background is in the hotel and hospitality industry. When it came time for my wedding, there were not many wedding planners adept in South Asian Weddings back in the day. So I decided to help brides who needed an expert in South Asian Weddings and was knowledgeable on all the different traditions and family dynamics.

We noticed with your designs and caliber of weddings, you must place trust in others. Do you have a team? Yes, we have a team that works on different tasks. We have people who focus on the brides, we have another team that focuses on social media and press, then we have someone who handles all bookings and appointments.
The wedding indutry is so visual and emotional. So, how has social media changed your business? Social Media is the new outlet for style and inspiration. It is an amazing way to network and share our events with the world at a touch of a button.

You’re obviously an expert in your field. How do you provide education to your couple’s during the planning process? By speaking with them everyday, whether it be via phone, text, email or instagram message. We get a lot of questions from our couples and clear and constant communication is key to guide them throughout their wedding planning.
What makes a successful wedding? Anticipating all the possible things that might go wrong and coming up with different solutions. Wedding planners are like professional problem solvers. Also, putting a team of great vendors is key. Putting a wedding together has many, many moving parts and different teams. Being able to work well together is crucial. The best weddings have spectacular vendors.

Do you want to offer perspective clients any advice on hiring a professional? Make sure to do your research and meet them in person. Make sure to read all of your contracts thoroughly (that is one of the biggest mistakes clients make before coming to us). Make sure the person you are hiring is the actual person at your event.
