Sara and Ahmed first met in medical school in 2011, but they didn’t speak until their second year. Ahmed was quiet and reserved, while Sara, new to the country and eager to make friends, was adjusting to life in a new city. They had few classes together and barely interacted.
In 2012, they finally connected at a party. Sara immediately found Ahmed to be warm, funny, and intelligent. After driving him home, they clicked instantly and spoke every day, quickly becoming close friends. Over time, they became each other’s safe place, sharing openness, acceptance, respect, and a lot of laughter. Ahmed was drawn to Sara’s warm nature, likable personality, and strength in navigating new challenges.
During their second-year final exams, Ahmed asked Sara out. Assuming it would be after the exams, Sara was surprised when Ahmed showed up the next day in a suit, ready for their date. After the exam, they went to Ahmed’s favorite spots in Lahore. They found peace within each other and knew they were meant to navigate life together.
In their last year of medical school, they faced the challenge of long distance as Ahmed pursued a medical residency in the US. After two years apart, Ahmed visited Sara and her family, reaffirming their love and desire to be together. In 2018, they got engaged and had a simple nikkah ceremony at IAGD mosque in Sara’s hometown of Rochester Hills, MI, with Sara’s beloved maternal grandmother present.
Plans for a wedding celebration were delayed by COVID and visa issues for Ahmed’s mother. Ahmed completed his residency, and they moved to California, bought their first house, and planned their wedding where they now call home.
Their journey as doctors in modern society involved waiting for their careers to take off, saving up to fund everything themselves, and keeping their events intimate and special. They balanced the meaningful parts of their religious and cultural traditions with their personal styles, beginning their new life together in California.
