With many weddings being postponed (sometimes even two or three times) due to Covid19 we are left thinking about what to do when the big day finally arrives. Hair and makeup is always on the top of every brides list but what to do and what to ask your hair and makeup artist when getting married during Covid19? We chatted with beauty expert Beauty by Lishma to tackle some of our most asked questions by brides to be.
Mandala Weddings Magazine – My wedding was originally scheduled for the Summer now I am planning on getting married in the Winter should I change my bridal look?
Beauty by Lishma – I’m so sorry that you are having to postpone your wedding due to this pandemic. This year has been a crazy ride for everyone in the industry including the couples who planned to get married in 2020. To answer your question, I believe your bridal look should be based on other factors rather than seasons. For example, the color hues of your makeup should complement your wedding outfit. Additionally, your personal preference on whether you like loud or subtle looks should guide your choices. I’ll leave you with one suggestion: when you think about your look focus on something timeless that when you look back at your wedding photos the look does not seem out of trend.
MW – What type of protection do you wear when doing makeup and hair?
BBL – The California Board of Cosmetology has published guidelines to ensure safety of our clients and our staff. The guidelines state that all make-up palettes should be sprayed down with alcohol after each use and all brushes should be cleaned after each use. We have taken additional steps to ensure we minimize exposure between our client and the staff. Our staff is required to keep their hair pulled back, wear a filtered mask and utilize a face shield for additional protection. We also ask the staff to sanitize their hands multiple times before, during and after application of make-up on each client.
MW – Would you still recommend doing a trial session during Covid19?
BBL – We are continuing to provide trials for our client with the safety measures stated above. However, in order to minimize exposure, our recommendation is to conduct a virtual session to discuss our client’s preferences and looks.
MW – I am feeling really stressed during Covid19 and it is effecting my skin causing me to break out is there anything I can do to help my skin before my wedding?
BBL – Stress does play a big role in causing break outs. We recommend our clients follow a good cleaning regimen by washing, toning and moisturizing your face each morning and evening. Additionally, eating healthy and balanced meals helps minimize break outs. Therefore, make sure you are well hydrated, take multi-vitamins and avoid oily/spicy food. Covid19 adds further sources of breakouts due to regular use of face masks. We would recommend a double-ply cotton mask with filter to reduce the abrasion on your skin whenever possible. Further, make sure you regularly change or wash your masks since they tend to get dirty over time. We recommend you start with a clean mask each day. Finally, don’t forget to hydrate. It’s easy to forget since we are wearing masks.
MW – Any at home beauty tips you can offer?
BBL – In addition to the skin care tips in the prior question, please ensure you get regular exercise and sleep and apply sunblock prior to stepping out. Our one advice is one rather breath through a mask than a ventilator. Please be safe and keep everyone around us safe by wearing a mask the correct way.
A little bit about Lishma of Beauty by Lishma
Lishma is an experienced make-up, hair and henna artist with over 13 years of experience. Her passion for make-up and henna grew from her hobby as she was performing various dances and plays in London, England. Upon graduating from University of London, Lishma moved to California in 2001.
Lishma identified a key need for professional make-up and henna artists for South Asian brides in Southern California. Beauty by Lishma was launched in 2001 to address this need for the Southern California market. Since the early days, Beauty by Lishma (B.B.L.) has enjoyed phenomenal success and now serves discerning clients of all ethnicities and ages for any occasion throughout the United States.
Lishma believes that “Bridal couture does not start or end with your attire, in fact, your face speaks a thousand words throughout your wedding day. Gone are the days when brides were ‘made up’ with a uniform bridal look. In fact, the new generations of brides have similar expectations, if not higher, from their make-up artists than those of their dress designers.
